Hagen shows the teeth of polluted rainwater
Hagen shows polluted rainwater its teeth. Wirtschaftsbetriebe Hagen relies on the Hydroshark hydrodynamic sedimentation system from drainage specialist 3P Technik Filtersysteme for the rainwater runoff from larger traffic areas. The system collects the runoff from a stormwater drain and prepares it for discharge into the nearby Volme river. It complies with all relevant regulations and specifications and ensures a high quality of the discharged water, which was also confirmed in the test by the IKT.
The drainage department of Wirtschaftsbetriebe Hagen is responsible for the urban drainage of the independent city in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. In addition to the expansion, operation and maintenance of the sewer network, with a total length of 675 kilometers, its tasks also include the drainage of traffic areas. As part of this, a rainwater sewer in the district of Dahl was to be equipped with a rainwater treatment system, which, among other things, collects rainwater runoff from around 12,000 m² of traffic areas, including sections of the busy B54 federal highway. The drainage takes place in the Volme river.
Highly effective thanks to teacup effect and serrated weir
A few years ago, a sludge trap was installed to improve the water quality before it was discharged into the river. However, it was no longer able to fully meet the requirements. After comparing different solutions, those responsible at Hagen Wirtschaftsbetriebe opted for the Hydroshark hydrodynamic sedimentation system from 3P Technik.
It treats the rainwater physically and largely removes filterable substances from the rainwater runoff. The system uses the “teacup effect” to do this.
- The hydrodynamic sedimentation system 3P Hydroshark 3000 was delivered to the construction site completely pre-assembled.
- The installation of the system took only two days after structural preparations.
- For the installation of the Hydroshark from 3P Technik in the Hagen district of Dahl, an existing sludge trap could be used with minor structural modifications.
- Thanks to its compact dimensions, the sedimentation system can be easily installed in existing shafts.
- After installation, the Hydroshark is connected to the existing inlet and outlet pipes.
- In future, the plant will effectively clean the rainwater runoff from 12,000 m² of traffic area so that the water can then be discharged into the nearby Volme river.
First, the water is fed tangentially into the center of the system,
The solids contained sink downwards into a sludge trap, which is hydraulically separated from the treatment chamber by a grating and flow breaker. This ensures that no remobilization of the settled substances can take place, even during heavy rainfall. Rising light substances, such as oils or pollen, are reliably retained as they cannot pass under the separator wall.
The water then flows evenly upwards in the outer ring, the end of which is formed by a serrated weir, which ensures that no short-circuit flows occur. The treated water can now be discharged directly into the Volme.
Short installation time thanks to pre-assembly and existing shaft
The Finger-Beton Group was responsible for planning, measuring and installing the Hyroshark. In close cooperation with Börder Abwassertechnik Mendig and 3P Technik, they were able to offer a complete service package. The installation of the Hydroshark in November 2020 in the existing shaft of the old sludge trap only took two days in total (excluding civil engineering work), as the system was delivered completely pre-assembled and the shaft only had to be adapted with minor structural measures. Wirtschaftsbetriebe Hagen is now benefiting from the sedimentation plant in several ways.
On the one hand, the cleaning performance of the rainwater is significantly increased and, on the other, the maintenance and operation of the system is made much easier. With its maintenance concept, the Hydroshark only requires the sludge trap to be sucked out, which can be done in just a few simple steps by opening the grating. In principle, the 3P Hydroshark sedimentation systems are not only suitable for DN 800 – 3000 manholes, but can also be used in road drains.
