Protection for crystal-clear Alpine waters
Hydroshark from 3P Technik cleans street drains in the Zugspitz village of Grainau
The Zugspitze region is popular with tourists and is known for its clean waters, among other things. To protect these from pollution caused by the high volume of tourist traffic, the municipality of Grainau has installed two 3P Technik Hydroshark sedimentation systems on busy roads.
The municipality of Grainau lies at the foot of Germany’s highest mountain. The “Zugspitze village” has a high volume of traffic, as it forms a bottleneck for car traffic on the way to the Zugspitze and Eibsee. The pollution of the traffic areas with typical pollutants such as tire and brake abrasion, substances containing mineral oil, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is correspondingly high. Protecting the crystal-clear waters around the municipality from the entry of pollutants was not only a requirement of environmental protection, but also a personal concern of Mayor Stephan Märkl, who grew up in Grainau. The annual rainfall of almost 1,700 mm is more than double the average amount of rainfall in Germany, which means that the volume of rainwater is correspondingly high. The Eibsee road, which carries all traffic to the lake of the same name and the cable car to the Zugspitze summit named after it, and the Waxenstein road, which is also very busy, were connected.
New DWA regulations with a holistic approach
A new set of rules from the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) describes the principles for planning stormwater treatment. Worksheet DWA-A 102 sets out principles for the planning, construction and operation of systems for the treatment of urban wastewater. It emphasizes the importance of environmental and water protection and follows a holistic approach that takes environmental aspects, technical requirements and economic considerations into account. All these factors could be fulfilled with the Hydroshark sedimentation plants from 3P Technik.
Compact sedimentation systems for high water volumes
The systems from 3P Technik are much more compact than other sedimentation solutions. They treat the rainwater physically. Filterable substances are largely removed from the rainwater runoff by a “teacup effect”. Solids sink downwards into a sludge trap in the middle of the system. It is hydraulically separated from the treatment chamber by flow breakers so that the deposited substances cannot remobilize even during the heavy rainfall that is to be expected in the Alpine region. The eponymous serrated weir prevents short-circuit flows and ensures homogeneous flow behavior. After treatment, the water quality of the rainwater runoff is so good that it can be discharged directly into the Krepbach, which flows into the Loisach.
Quick installation on site thanks to pre-assembly
Two Hydroshark systems were installed in the sizes DN 2500 and DN 3000 with a high hydraulic capacity of 220 l/s and 378 l/s respectively, which can be connected to large traffic areas of 12,000 m² and 18,000 m² in accordance with DWA-A 102. The systems were completely pre-installed in a concrete shaft at the factory. Once the required pits had been excavated, the shafts only had to be installed by crane, connected to the inlets and outlets and backfilled. This meant that installation took just one day.
