Amazon relies on targeted treatment of rainwater runoff.
3P Hydroshark impresses with high cleaning performance for rainwater at the new distribution center in Giengen.
A distribution center for the online shipper Amazon is being built in the Giengen industrial park near the A7 motorway. The rainwater from an area of almost 30,000 m² will in future be cleaned and treated using two Hydroshark sedimentation systems from 3P Technik.
The construction of the new logistics building for the world’s largest online mail order company Amazon is of great economic importance for the district of Heidenheim. At the same time, it is a showcase for sustainable and ecological construction. The distribution center is being built in the new Giengen Industrial Park, which covers around 40 hectares. Its convenient location on the A7 motorway between Ulm and Würzburg makes it an ideal location for warehousing and logistics space. According to the planning specifications of the approval authority, the rainwater from the almost 30,000 m² paved area is to be cleaned and treated in two sedimentation plants.
High-performance and compact sedimentation systems
The enormous hydraulic requirements that arise in such areas make sophisticated basic planning necessary. The challenge was to find a suitable system for treating the rainwater to ensure optimum purification. The Hydroshark sedimentation systems from 3P Technik, a specialist in rainwater treatment, were able to convince the project participants in all planning-relevant points. The systems are powerful and yet very compact. They are ideal for cleaning the hydraulic flows of large industrial areas from the particulate solids that accumulate.
Teacup effect and prevention of short-circuit flows
In the sedimentation system, the water is initially introduced tangentially in the middle of the system. This is where the sedimentation of solids takes place due to the so-called teacup effect. These sink into the sludge trap below, which is hydraulically separated from the treatment chamber by flow breakers so that the settled particles are not remobilized even during heavy rainfall. The water then flows evenly upwards in the outer ring of the system. A serrated weir ensures that there are no short-circuit flows and that the flow is as homogeneous as possible. The water then flows into the drain via the serrated weir. Light substances such as oils or pollen are effectively retained as they cannot pass under the separator wall. There is no height offset between the inlet and outlet, which is also an enormous advantage when retrofitting existing systems. In addition, the system cannot block in any way. The system can be used on all surfaces, from roofs to traffic areas and industrial sites. The cleaning performance is designed in such a way that the requirements of DWA-M 153, DWA-A102 and the NRW separation decree are reliably met.
Shortest construction times thanks to pre-equipped concrete shafts
The construction company Max Wild GmbH praised the quick and problem-free installation. For this project, standard concrete shafts in the dimensions DN 2000 and DN 2500 were fitted with Hydroshark sedimentation units in advance by Röser Vertriebs GmbH and delivered to the construction site ready for connection. This proven plug & play system ensured extremely fast installation and problem-free integration into the planned drainage concept. The necessary construction and earthworks were completed in just a few days and the construction pits could be backfilled.
Maintenance work without interrupting operation
Maintenance of the treatment systems is also very user-friendly. The sludge chamber must be vacuumed out and cleaned once a year. Thanks to the space-saving installation, which only requires the opening of a standard 600 mm manhole cover, the logistics traffic of the Amazon distribution center can be maintained even during ongoing maintenance.
